While I grew up with the 9 planets version (yes Pluto, you will always be a planet to me), it seems that Pokémon Go players have walked enough to pass it by – thus, leaving our solar system. Pluto is 7.5 billion kilometers away, while as of December 7th players have walked over 8.7 billion kilometers. Take that fast food chains!
Niantic also compared it to taking 200,000 trips around the Earth. If that feat was attempted in a commercial airliner…it would take over 1000 years to cover the same distance. It all of that walking time, players have caught over 88 billion Pokémon, averaging around 533 million a day. I’m betting at least 50% are Pidgey, Caterpie, and Ratatta’s.
While I don’t think this game is a source of people getting motivated to get up and exercise each morning. I’m sure it’s got more than a few of us at least up off the couch to go find some of those rare Pokémon.
